BIBA (Bremen Institute of Industrial Technology and Applied Work Science at the University of Bremen), located in the northern part of Germany, has 120 employees including four professors, 80 research scientists, PhD-students and administrative staff. It is an interdisciplinary research institute. The institute is directly linked to the University of Bremen, Department of Production Engineering, and educates students in mechanical engineering and economics. Its annual turnover for 2003 was 4.9 Mio, of which 76% came from contractual work and research programmes, and 30% basic governmental funding. The division IKAP designs, develops and implements methods and tools to support inter-organisational company networks. The research focuses on designing efficient and effective processes by applying information and communication technologies while the main aspect is the collaboration in distributed production processes including end-of-life processes. Results of the research are applied in the education of next generation engineers as well as in industrial projects. The department BIBA-IKAP, which is involved in the Leaf proposal, is dealing with smart organizations, virtual and extended enterprises, logistics, production systems, mobile systems and computer science.
